Now that all your favorite TV shows have ended and summer is upon us, most of us are finding that we have a little time on our hands. Sure, in the era of Netflix, Tivo, and OnDemand TV we might have some of our favorite episodes stored, but who wants to waste even more time sitting in front of the tube. No, I'm not going to recommend that you spend more time in the yard or running on a path in your favorite park. Instead, I think that we should broaden our horizons and create something beautiful for ourselves or for a loved one. Why not get involved in some kind of craft?

I once took a course in college that was entitled, 'Leisure And Liberal Arts'. I took the class because it had the word 'Leisure' in it, but it was far from a blowoff. The class talked about how the population spends too much time working, and when they aren't working, most spent their spare time in front of the TV. The premise of the class was the idea of a world where people spent their spare time learning liberal arts, such as poetry, art, or learning to play an instrument. Nice idea, but who has the time right?

Well, getting setup in a local art class can take less time out of your day than you would think. Most people that I teach are surprised at how quickly they progress after just a summer course. It actually is quite amazing at the things that you can create with your hands when you give it a little focused effort. And as strange as it sounds, doing something that's out of your comfort zone or something that you weren't aware that you could do builds tremendous confidence. I have students that have branched into taking one course/class a year and over the past five years have built up some impressive skills, like piano or guitar. After just a few years, they become a regular renaissance man/woman!

So before you start tearing through your saved episodes on TIVO, open up the list of classes at the local community college and see what's available. While spending a couple hours may not seem like the best way to spend a summer, think about the beauty you'll be adding to the world when you're done with your first piece. Ah! My professor would be so proud!

OK, you're having a party. You have the guest list prepared. You have a good idea of the menu. You even have a good idea of who you're going to invite. Now for the really important stuff. The party supplies.

Now, don't pretend you have no idea of what party supplies are. I'm talking streamers, poppers� and those funny costumes that everyone thinks are great on the night but cause so much embarrassment (Only joking). Seriously, though, some great accessories can really add a touch of fun to any party, even a dinner party, as long as it isn't too formal. Even if the party isn't fancy dress, the host dressing up in a costume for part of the evening can make for a real talking point.

And as for streamers, it doesn't have to be a Christmas or New Year party to get them out. A wild throwing about of some paper toward the end of the evening is always worth a giggle. (Try to ensure your guests help to tidy up afterwards and do watch the goldfish bowl!) Same with the poppers. Make the night go with a bang.

And don't forget the more mundane stuff, like coasters, or napkins. A good supply of coasters can protect the varnish on that new coffee table. And napkins are essential to help clear up mess, which is almost inevitable.

Talking of drinks, there's one thing which is almost as inevitable as a spilled drink, and that's to not have enough glasses, or not have enough of a particular type of glass. The solution is simple. Rent some glasses for the party. Many companies will deliver and pick up later. This is one less headache to think about.

So whatever you do, don't forget the party supplies, and don't forget to have fun.

When you are taking photos and the lighting conditions are perfect, then digital photography lighting is not a problem. Unfortunately, most of the time, the conditions are not ideal so photographers have to learn to use light to get the desired results. The first thing you want to be concerned with is the main source of light on your subject. Ask yourself questions such as where the light source comes from, do you require artificial light, is there enough natural light and will your tripod need stabilizing because of low light? You need to master digital photography lighting to get the clarity and detail in your image. Sometimes a flash is all you need, while other occasions require different lighting. Remember that a flash does not benefit all situations.

You do not want a flash to interfere artistically or socially, such as during someone's wedding vows, as you will end up with a flat digital image. This occurs frequently on digital cameras with a built-in flash and they also only light the subject from the front. Because of this the digital photo depth is compressed, which really decreases and detracts from the digital image. One way to avoid this is by watching exactly where the light falls. Once you learn and understand about digital photography lighting, the task becomes easier as you learn exactly what does and does not work when using a flash. Use a higher ISO to help alleviate a low light problem - this is a sensor that is light sensitive - but remember that there is an increase in noise when using the ISO. Fortunately, some good software programs available on the market today do reduce the noise. Adjusting the ISO to a higher level also works great in situations where a flash is not acceptable, such as someone giving a speech, where a flash would be disruptive.

If you take many sports photographs, try experimenting with and without a flash and your camera settings, to learn what works best. A built-in flash is more effective up close, where an external flash is more powerful. Many sports stadiums remain well enough lit to take pictures without a flash and many do not allow a flash, because it distracts the competitors. One digital photography lighting technique that works well for taking still subjects in very low light is image stabilization. IS or image stabilization allows you to lower your shutter speed, which works great, but this is not suitable for fast-moving images. In any case, read your camera manual, as many digital cameras have a built-in mode for taking sports pictures. This controls the amount of light admitted, the ISO and the shutter speed, so you end up with the best photograph possible, under the lighting conditions you find yourself working in.

When I was a child in the New Orleans area, my big brown eyes would be popping at Halloween time with vivid images, shapes, characters and colors designed to capture the imagination and transport one into another sense of reality. I recall scary voodoo zombies regaling the windows of storefronts, Halloween jesters staring out from behind curtains, expressive uses of masks with a French or Creole twist, and these visuals combined with music and food would be a fun, frightening feast for the senses.

Now that we've moved into the Northeast and times have changed, Halloween has become more demure and conservative, and in many ways around our neighborhood, barely noticeable. Parents have become spooked themselves about having their children running around trick-or-treating, and small parties - tightly-controlled - have replaced the traditional community experience of Halloween. I can understand why that's happened, but it doesn't prevent me from trying to bring some of that old New Orleans spirit to my adopted hometown; in fact, it inspires me to share some ideas. I'd like to share these 5 with you.

1. Curtains - the Blacker, the Better!

It's really inexpensive to purchase some black fabrics online and spread them all throughout the house; curtains over windows, draped over furniture, hanging in corners or in unexpected places. This alone can give a dramatic 'cape of fear' over one's home. Use liberally.

2. Make Strange Costumes!

This is a bit more involved, but rather than buying costumes off the shelf, a little imagination can turn some cheap fabric and some well-glued craft goodies into one-of-a-kind, bizarre costumes with weird shapes and faces. I recommend a combination of black and other ghoulish colors.

3. 'Webbing.'

Fabric alone can be taken and 'shredded' to make a host of scary cobwebs all around the house and especially on the front porch. 'Webs' draped everywhere create a sense of foreboding as the children approach the door - creating a spooky effect that 'primes' them for the fear to come once they ring the doorbell.

4. Eerie Lighting!

Setting up light bulbs (I strongly recommend red) at specific points of interest can cast ghastly hues and shadows in the windows and on the porch, as well as when you open the door. I like to have a light directly behind me when I answer the door, because it gives the effect of a gigantic silhouette. If this light is red or orange, it completely magnifies the effect!

5. Scary Faces Everywhere!

I purchase a bunch of cheap masks that, when in used in combination with the webbing, lighting, and black curtains, create the illusion of living faces peering out from every nook of the house. If done correctly, this creates the sense of a 'ghoul jungle' that is fun, surprising, and never fails to delight the kids - even if there is a scream or two!

I do try to keep away from the bloody, murder-themed stuff - but I like making my Halloween experience as fun and spooky as possible without crossing the line. I may never recapture what I enjoyed in New Orleans as a kid, but every year I try to come as close as possible!

If Santa needs a helper, elves can also be fun. You can even find costumes for reindeer, Mrs. Claus, and other familiar Christmas characters such as Frosty the Snowman or The Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

And, a list of Christmas characters wouldn't be complete without considering the scenes from the nativity. Churches throughout the world reenact the event of Christ's birth and all the characters involved including the angels, baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the Wise Men need to be represented. Christmas costumes for the various barnyard animals that may have been present are also a must.

Most of the Biblical Christmas costumes seem to be homemade. Some Sunday school classes turn this into a project. But, Santa Claus costumes and other Christmas costumes are usually rented. The fabrics are often difficult to find and the costumes are only used for a short time. Of course, if you are a department store Santa, chances are the store will provide your costume for you.

While you might not think of Christmas as being a traditional 'costume time of year', Christmas costumes are actually quite common. There are even Christmas-themed costume parties that happen around this time of year. It's fun to dress up at any time of the year, not just Halloween. And dressing up isn't just for kids.

Remember that Christmas time is festive and there are costumes present all the time. If you are interested in finding Christmas costumes, you can either make them or rent them. Costume shops have plenty of choices.

You may need to reserve that Santa suit in advance, though. They're popular.
